Are you ready to go retro?

As more and more businesses look for ways to save money, retrocommissioning (RCx) moves to the top of
the list for many. RCx offers an excellent solution for existing buildings - simple payback from energy
savings in less than two years, reduced operating expenses, extended equipment life, fewer comfort
complaints and a savings of 5 to 20 percent on the total building's energy costs. On top of all that,
Focus will pay for up to 85 percent of your RCx study fees!
What is retrocommissioning?
Retrocommissioning,
or existing building commissioning, is a systematic process of reviewing and identifying an existing
structure's major energy-consuming systems to find opportunities to optimize how equipment operates
as an integrated system.
The process results in a comprehensive list of maintenance, operational, no-cost and low-cost improvements
that help reduce operating costs, extend equipment life and increase occupant comfort.
Let Focus help you go retro
Focus on Energy specializes in helping businesses manage and reduce their energy use. The program provides
valuable engineering services and well as Cash-Back Rewards of up to 85 percent on RCx study fees to
achieve gas, electric demand, and electric energy savings.
Who's eligible?
Participating commercial buildings, schools and government facilities must meet the following eligibility
requirements before submitting an application for the retrocommissioning program:
- Have a minimum of 100,000-square-feet of conditioned space. The conditioning must come from electricity or natural gas (not district steam).
- Purchase electricity or natural gas from a Wisconsin utility
participating in the Focus on Energy program.
- Use a minimum summer peak demand of 300 kilowatt-hours.
- Express a willingness to commit funding to complete the project plan and implement measures.
- Own an existing building with an energy management system (EMS) that has direct digital control (DDC).
- Facility must be free of major problems requiring costly repairs or replacements and have no major system renovations or retrofits planned.
- Have accessible and up-to-date building documentation and records.
- Facility owner and operations and maintenance staff must express a commitment to be actively involved in the retrocommissioning process.
Thinking about new construction?
Building commissioning provides documented confirmation that building systems function according to the
owner's operational needs. This quality assurance process spans the entire design and construction process,
helping to ensure that the new building's performance meets expectations. By completing this process while
building, you can save big with:
- Fewer system deficiencies at building turnover.
- Improved coordination between design, construction and occupancy.
- Construction cost savings of 4 to 9 percent.
- Energy savings of $0.02 to $0.19 per square foot.
- Non-energy savings of $0.23 to $6.96 per square foot.
