Yours could be the next Wisconsin Energy-Independent Community!

In 2007, Governor Jim Doyle created the Office of Energy Independence. Governor Doyle’s mission in creating this office was to help Wisconsin rely less on fossil fuels that are imported to the state and become more energy independent. His specific goals include:
  • Generating 25 percent of our state’s electricity and transportation fuels from renewable resources by 2025.
  • Capturing 10 percent of the emerging bioindustry and renewable energy market by 2030.
  • Leading the nation in groundbreaking research that will make renewable energy more affordable and create well-paying Wisconsin jobs.
As part of this office, Doyle also launched the Wisconsin Energy Independent Communities initiative. This voluntary partnership is integral to advancing energy independence in Wisconsin. Communities are asked to sign a resolution and adopt the initiative goals to help the state rely less on foreign fossil fuels.

Why should your community participate?
In today’s tough economic times, nearly every community is looking for ways to cut costs and more efficiently manage their budgets. One solution is to decrease operational expenses, including energy use. By adopting energy efficient and renewable energy practices and technologies, you can make energy costs a controlled cost in your community.

Not only can you reduce your operational expenses, you can demonstrate your dedication to helping the state’s economy and environment – as well as receive additional funding and technical assistance from state and federal agencies.

Get started today
Getting started is easy. Simply demonstrate your commitment by contacting the Office of Energy Independence. They will guide you through the process of joining the nearly 100 Wisconsin communities who are already participating.
