Chocolate-covered bacon, deep-fried OreosTM, macaroni and... energy? This year, the Wisconsin State Fair took our state's fascination with all things on a stick to a new level with the installation of a pole-mounted solar tracker the generates electric power.
This system—which does, indeed, look like a giant stick!—features solar photovoltaic (PV) panels mounted on a movable rack that follows the sun's movement throughout the day. The combination creates a solar energy system that has a small footprint and maximizes both the capture of solar energy and the production of electricity. Located at the northeast corner of the cattle barn along North Grandstand Avenue, the 2.3-kilowatt system will produce about 3,200 kilowatt-hours of electricity each year.
The tracker joins a 28.8-kilowatt system of rooftop panels at the Wisconsin Products Pavilion that generates about 34,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year. Both systems are connected to the Wisconsin State Fair grid and annually produce enough electricity to power roughly four houses—or cook an impressive number of corndogs!
The systems were sponsored in part by Conserve Wisconsin, Focus on Energy, and We Energies. The installation was approved by the State of Wisconsin Building Commission with design and construction managed by the Department of Administration Division of State Facilities.
