Looking to Stay Cool, While Saving Green?

Focus on Energy recommends the following tips for staying cool during hot summer days, while on a budget:

1. Shut out the hot summer sun by closing windows and pulling shades or curtains.

2. Run your ceiling fan in lieu of your air conditioners; however, be sure to turn the fan off when you're not in the room to save energy — fans cool people, not rooms.

3. Use a programmable thermostat so it can automatically adjust the temperature setting while you are asleep or at work, saving you $100 a year.

4. Regularly clean or change the air conditioner/furnace filter according to the system's instructions.

5. Run heat-producing appliances at night or early in the morning to avoid adding more heat to a home and putting extra strain on an air conditioner.

The Savings Keep Adding Up

Every year since 2001, Focus on Energy has helped residents, farms and businesses save more than $239 million dollars in energy costs. These are savings that translate into real economic and environmental benefits.

To put the savings into perspective, they are equivalent to:

  • The amount of electricity consumed annually by approximately 173,000 average homes in Wisconsin.

  • The amount of natural gas consumed annually by more than 89,000 average Wisconsin homes.

  • Almost 4 billion pounds of carbon dioxide

  • The amount of electricity produced by burning 8,650 rail car loads of coal.

  • The same energy value as 4.9 million barrels of oil.

  • Events You Don't Want to Miss
