Efficient Heating and Cooling FAQs
Q: Am I eligible for a Cash-Back Reward?
A: Your eligibility for the Efficient Heating & Cooling Program is based on your electric or natural gas utility provider. To determine whether you are eligible, click on the drop-down eligibility tool in the top menu bar.
Q: What is a variable speed motor?
A: Your furnace fan's motor controls how much air is circulated in your home when the fan is operating. A standard motor will provide air at pre-set rates, while a variable speed motor offers a wider range of fan speed that will adjust to your home's heating or cooling needs. These "smart motors" typically use one-third the electricity of a conventional furnace fan and may be referred to by a variety of names, including electrically commutated motor (ECM) or brushless DC motor.
Q: My new furnace/boiler/air conditioner has the ENERGY STAR® logo, why didn't I receive a reward?
A: The furnace or air conditioner must meet the Efficient Heating & Cooling Program requirements to qualify for a reward. Not all ENERGY STAR qualified equipment qualifies for Focus on Energy's Efficient Heating & Cooling Program rewards.
Q: Why does my electric utility have to participate in Focus on Energy for my furnace to be eligible for a reward? The furnace uses natural gas.
A: We are not paying an incentive for the gas savings, rather the electrical savings which are produced by the ECM.
Q: If my electric company does not participate, are there any rewards I am eligible for?
A: Yes. You are eligible for boiler and flue closure rewards if your gas provider is a participating natural gas utility. Remember, you must install a qualified furnace or boiler to be eligible for the flue closure reward.
Please see the Participating Utility Lists to confirm your eligibility.
