Tax Incentives

|    Residential Tax Incentives   |    Renewable Energy Tax Incentives   |    Business Energy Tax Incentives   |

Federal and state tax incentives are now available to home and business owners who install energy efficient equipment, adopt renewable energy measures or improve the overall efficiency of a home or building. Wisconsin manufacturers can also exempt the sales taxes they pay on energy used to make their products.

Focus on Energy will help you take advantage of these federal and state tax breaks. Click on the links above to learn more.

Taxing Terminology
Several terms, including incentives, credits, deductions, exemptions and rebates, are used to refer to tax benefits. But, they mean different things:
  • Tax incentives reduce the amount of tax owed, dollar for dollar.
  • Tax credits are the same as incentives, at least as they apply to the federal 2005 Energy Policy Act.
  • Tax deductions reduce overall taxable income. The value of the deduction depends on your tax bracket.
  • Tax exemptions eliminate, or remove, taxes for specific items.
  • Rebates are simplified tax incentives: instead of reducing the amount of tax owed, they reduce the cost of an equipment purchase.
