The process, step-by-step.

Many people are interested in using renewable energy to meet their energy needs, but sometimes it is difficult to know exactly where to start. Use the steps and links below as a guide to help you discover whether renewable energy can work for you and to turn your renewable energy dream into a reality.

First things first — focus on energy efficiency
Before you purchase any renewable energy system, it's important to first maximize the energy efficiency of your home or business. The smaller your energy needs, the lower your monthly energy bills—and the less you'll need to spend on a renewable energy system that's capable of meeting your needs.

If you still have unanswered questions following your site assessment, contact Focus on Energy.

Find an installer

It's time to bid out your project. Use our Find it with Focus tool to find a contractor near you who can install a renewable energy system that works for your property. Focus strongly suggests obtaining bids from two to three experienced installers. Suggested screening questions can be found here.

Your renewable energy system installation will need to comply with federal, state, and local building codes. It's likely that the project needs a building, electrical and/or plumbing permit. If producing electricity, your project must also adhere to utility interconnection requirements. A reputable installer will work with you to ensure compliance with these items.

Secure financing

There are several places to turn for funding your renewable energy system a home equity loan, a capital improvement loan, federal tax incentives and depreciation and utility program incentives.

Maintenance

Ask your installer to give detailed, written instructions on how to maintain your system properly and safely. Be sure to learn basic safety requirements and procedures, like how to shut down the system in emergencies and how to power up the system after it has been shut down.

Congratulations! After your initial investment, you will notice a change in your energy bill as your system begins to save energy and money. You can also enjoy the sense of pride that comes from producing your own energy without adding to fuel costs, noise, or pollution, and from doing your part to protect our environment.
