Steam Systems Steam Systems Assessment Co-Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy The Steam System Assessment Workshop covers the operation of typical steam systems and discusses methods of system efficiency improvement. The one-day workshop is designed for end users--at the energy manager, steam system supervisor, engineer and operations level--who have steam system responsibilities in industrial and institutional plants. The workshop is divided into three major categories: Steam Generation Efficiency: The boiler is investigated with the target of obtaining optimum steam generation efficiency. Resource Utilization Effectiveness: Encompasses fuel selection, combined heat and power systems, steam system balancing and steam end users. The course covers the basic concepts of combined heat and power systems along with opportunities associated with steam system balancing. Steam Distribution System Losses: Focus areas include steam leaks, heat transfer loss through insulation and condensate loss. For each of the categories the workshop goes into detail about the equipment and theory of operation. Several case studies are presented from steam system surveys conducted by the course developer. The fee for this course is $65 and includes continental breakfast, lunch and training materials. Steam System Specialist Qualification Co-Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy The primary goal of the US Department of Energy's (DOE) Steam System Specialist Qualification workshop is to equip participants to be fluent in the appropriate use of the BestPractices Steam Tools Suite, which includes: Steam System Scoping Tool (SSST) Steam System Assessment Tool (SSAT) Steam System Survey Guide The 3E-Plus Insulation Appraisal software tool will also be introduced. The workshop will be two-and-a-half days long. The first two days will cover the lesson materials. Numerous in-class problems will be worked and discussed so that class participants will understand the applicability and limitations of the Best Practices Steam Tools. On the third morning of the workshop, the Specialist Qualification examination will be offered. Class participants that pass the examination (85% examination grade or above) will be designated as BestPractices Steam Qualified Specialists, and their names and contact information will be listed on the U.S. DOE BestPractices website. Course Requirements: It is a mandatory requirement that you have the Steam System Scoping Tool (SSST), Steam System Assessment Tool (SSAT), and 3E-Plus software loaded and operational on a laptop computer that you bring with you to the training. Particularly for loading the SSAT software, this laptop should have an up-to-date version of the Microsoft Windows operating system (Windows98, NT, 2000, and XP are appropriate). Also, for the SSAT software, you will need to have a version of Microsoft Excel on your computer. Course Preparation: A prerequisite study guide will be sent to everyone who pre-registers and downloads DOE Steam System Evaluation Software. Completing the prerequisite study guide will give you an indication of your readiness to participate in the Specialist Qualification Training. Participants should be confident in the solution method of each problem. It should be noted that all of the prerequisite material is covered in the BestPractices Steam Systems Assessment Training, a one-day introductory course on steam systems. That class is scheduled on Monday of the same week and is listed above.
