Efficient Heating and Cooling FAQs
Q: Am I Eligible to Participate?
A: Your eligibility for the Efficient Heating and Cooling Program is based primarily on your electric utility provider. To determine whether you are eligible, click on the drop-down eligibility tool in the top menu bar.
Q: What is an ECM motor?
A: An ECM (Electronically Commutated Motor) is what controls the furnace fan on high-efficiency furnaces. They may also be called brushless DC motors. ECMs typically use one-third the electricity of a conventional furnace fan. Keep in mind that just because a furnace has a 90%+ AFUE rating does not necessarily mean it has an ECM.
Q: My furnace/air conditioner has the ENERGY STAR® logo, why didn't I receive a reward?
A: The furnace or air conditioner must meet the Efficient Heating & Cooling Program requirements to qualify for a reward. Not all ENERGY STAR qualified furnaces and air conditioners qualify for Focus on Energy's Efficient Heating & Cooling Program rewards.
Q: Why am I not eligible for a reward on my furnace because my electric company does not participate in the program? The furnace uses natural gas.
A: We are not paying an incentive for the gas savings, rather the electrical savings which are produced by the ECM.
Q: If my electric company does not participate, are there any rewards I am eligible for?
A: Yes. You are eligible for boiler rewards if your gas provider is a participating natural gas utility. Please see the Participating Utility Lists.
