Thermostat disposal normally wouldn't be considered a significant environmental problem at all; however, some types of thermostats have switches that contain mercury. Mercury is a natural material with extremely useful properties, but if improperly managed it can pose serious health risks and can be a potent environmental contaminant.Recycling is the right thing to do. By recycling used mercury-switch thermostats, you help ensure a cleaner environment for all of us.

The Thermostat Recycling Corporation (TRC), a not-for-profit corporation owned by three NEMA member companies, facilitates the collection by HVAC wholesalers from contractors of all brands of used, wall-mounted mercury-switch thermostats so that the mercury can be purified for re-use.

Under this voluntary, industry-sponsored program, heating, ventilation, and cooling contractors can drop off used mercury-switch thermostats-no matter what brand-at participating wholesalers. Wholesalers collect the thermostats in protective bins supplied by TRC. The mercury is removed from the thermostats and recycled.
